Summerland was incorporated as a municipality in 1906, and the only remaining portion of the historic Kettle Valley Railway, built between 1910-1915, is one of the area’s main tourist attractions, with tours through Summerland’s picturesque Prairie Valley through to Canyon View. This is where passengers get off to look at the Trout Creek Trestle Bridge, the third largest of its kind in North America, and one of the most famous features on the railway. “Wharton Square” is named for Charlie Wharton, one of the original settlers who came to work on the railroad and plant some of the first orchards. Arriving from England in 1896, he stayed for 50 years and ran the outdoor skating rinks that are still remembered as beloved meeting places for the community..
